Unexpected Situation
You know when your day is sailing along, it's pretty outside, you enjoy time with your friend over lunch, you pick up groceries, you arrive home and discover someone has accidentally locked you out of your house and left town for the weekend.
For a few seconds I wanted to yell, after all I'm wearing nice clothes, it's hot, and my groceries are thawing rapidly.
I called him, no answer, he was mowing grass and his phone was in his truck. I then left the following message: you locked the bottom lock. The lock that can't be opened with a key from the outside because the lock is broken.
Then the words from Ephesians 4:26 entered my mind: Be angry and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath. I had a choice to make. Why become angry? Why have a fit? I'm still outside, I'm still hot, and we won't discuss the state of my groceries. After all, I make mistakes, I am not perfect. Anger would not change my situation.
I broke a window pane, unlocked the window, and then tried to open it. I was astounded, it would not budge. So I called the non emergency number of our local police department and asked if an officer could help me open the window.
2 officers responded, verified my ID, and as I returned my ID to my purse, 1 of the officers opened the window in a second, probably with his little finger.
I was embarrassed beyond belief. How could he open it so fast and could not move it an 1/8 of an inch?!?!?!
He asked if I needed him to crawl in, I said I can do it. I bent over at the waist, stuck one leg in my house, stood up inside my house, and brought my other leg into the house. I opened my door, thanked the officers, retrieved my purse and groceries. I said I may be weak but I am limber. They laughed and said goodbye.
My husband felt terrible. He said scold me. I asked why, what will that accomplish?
I was laughing at that point, picturing myself crawling in the window and the new neighbors wondering why the police are at my house.
Welcome to the neighborhood!
Ephesians 4:29 also applied to my situation:
Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but was is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
I spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing watching hummingbirds. All in all, a great day.
